How To Clean Air Conditioning Unit
When your air conditioning system is clean, it operates more efficiently and reliably. It also lasts longer. While you should have your AC system tuned-up once a year by a professional, there are components you can clean if you have the right tools and knowledge.
Your air conditioner has an outdoor unit and an interior component. Its evaporator coils are inside of your home. These coils are where heat is removed from your house when warm air passes over them.
You should turn off the power to your AC system. You’ll find the evaporator coils in the blower unit, which may have screws holding a door in place. Clean the coils using a soft brush. This will remove dust, which reduces how efficiently the coils can remove heat.
There’s a drain pan under the evaporator coil that also should be cleaned. Do so with a mixture of 50/50 bleach and water. Pour this mixture into the drain below the evaporator coil.
Outdoor AC Unit
Since your outdoor AC unit is exposed to weather, it can get very dirty. Remove its grille cover by removing the screws on top of the AC unit. Scoop out any debris at the bottom of the unit. You can use your hands or a wet vac.
Next, you’ll want to clean the coils and fins. You can buy a cleaning solution for the fins at a home improvement store. Mix it according to the instructions on the package, and then spray it on the coils. Leave it for a few minutes, and then spray it off with a hose.
You can buy a fin tool at a home improvement store to straighten the fins. This makes your AC system operate more efficiently. Use the tool to comb each fin into place.
