Reasons Why Your Furnace Is Blowing Cold Air
If your furnace is only blowing cold air, there can be several reasons why. There are a few things you can check before placing a call to a furnace repair company.
Misprogrammed Thermostat
Check your thermostat settings. Make sure the switch is on “ON” and not “AUTO.” When it’s on “AUTO,” the fan will run constantly and blow cold air when the furnace isn’t on. The “ON” setting only turns the fan on when the furnace is on.
Check the Air Filter
A dirty air filter reduces the airflow in your heating and cooling system. This can cause the furnace to overheat, which trips the limit switch that prevents damage. The fans will keep running, however, which causes cool air to blow from your vents.
Computerized Controls Malfunction
Newer furnaces have a computerized control panel. You may need to reset the furnace by turning it off with its power switch. You should wait a few minutes, restart the furnace and see if that corrects the problem.
Faulty Electric Ignition
Newer furnaces start via an electric ignition. It may need to be adjusted or replaced. You need to call a technician to fix this problem.

Extinguished Pilot Light
Old furnaces have a pilot light that’s always burning. Check to see if it’s gone out, such as from a gust of wind. You can try relighting it yourself or have a technician do it for you.
Faulty Flame Sensor
If the flame sensor gets covered in dirt, it will cause the burner to shut off. A technician can clean it to solve this problem.
