The Safety Piece Nobody Mentions
Here’s something that belongs in the conversation and rarely makes it.
A badly leaking return doesn’t just move air around. It changes the pressure inside your house. Pull enough air out of a crawlspace and you can depressurize parts of the home — which, if you’ve got a gas water heater or a gas furnace with a standard flue, can pull combustion gases back down the vent instead of up and out.
That’s called backdrafting. It’s uncommon, it’s not a reason to panic, and a lot of houses will never see it. But it’s a real thing that a proper ac maintenance visit should be looking at when there’s a gas appliance in a tight or oddly-pressurized space.
If you have gas anything and a musty, humid house, mention both in the same sentence when you call. It changes what gets checked.

What to Say When You Book
You don’t need technical vocabulary. You need one sentence that redirects the visit.
Try this: “Before you touch the equipment, I want the return side inspected and photographed — plenum, filter cabinet, and every joint you can reach.”
Then ask for two things written on the invoice. Indoor humidity at the time of the visit. And static pressure at the air handler, which is basically blood pressure for your ductwork — most homes are designed around 0.5 inches of water column, and plenty of older ones here read double that.
Written down matters. A number you can’t compare to next year’s number is just trivia.
When This Isn’t Your Answer
A few honest exceptions, because you’ve earned them.
The exception is a house with ducts entirely inside conditioned space — some newer builds in Madison and Harvest are built this way. A return leak there is still inefficient, but it’s pulling from inside your own house, not from a swamp under the floor. Much smaller problem, much lower priority.
This also doesn’t work if one specific room is hot while the rest of the house is fine. That’s a distribution problem on the supply side, and it starts with repair diagnostics rather than return sealing.

Does standard ac maintenance include checking return ducts?

Duct integrity is a separate discipline that takes a crawlspace trip and a flashlight. If the return side is why you’re calling, say so at booking and ask for photographs of the plenum and joints on the invoice. Nobody adds it unless you ask.
How much does a leaking return actually cost me per year?
It depends on the size of the leak, but the arithmetic isn’t complicated. If a fifth of your return air is coming from a 90-degree crawlspace instead of your 74-degree living room, your system is doing meaningful extra work every cycle. Can I just seal the return duct myself with duct tape?

Sealing pairs well with duct cleaning — but do the sealing first, because cleaning a leaking duct only gives you a clean leak.
